Marlis Thane

Walsh’s prison is clean and well-kept compared to some, but as you are led to Marlis’ cell you can see that he hasn’t been treated well—the guards obviously feel strongly about the murder of a beautiful young girl and have taken it upon themselves to make sure Marlis’ stay is unpleasant as possible. The old man is bruised and dirty, but his posture remains straight and his grizzled features have lost none of their dignity.

Marlis Thane has spent most of his life in Walsh, first as a student in several of the battle colleges there, then as a mercenary, and finally as an instructor at the Priory of the Open Palm. His mercenary career was a long and successful one; he achieved minor celebrity in his youth after he averted a very public assassination attempt on a Wistron general visiting the battle schools. He is well past his prime, but he is still a capable warrior and takes great pride in his work with the Priory’s students.

He was nearly executed in 995 W. when he was framed for the murder of his student Challa Redroot. He was in engaged in an affair with her mother Vasha at the time, which, though not against his vows per se, would have been frowned upon by some members of the Priory. Fortunately, his name was cleared by The Party and he was able to return both to Vasha and to the Priory.
